FLIP.

PLAY.

LEARN.

This project explores subtle representations of South-Korean culture, illustrated into a colourful and bold small-scaled card game for a fun and playful learning experience. Made for kids, enjoyed by all.

“Working on this project, I have taught myself how to utilize my whimsical and colourful illustrative storytelling for a physical product. Creating and developing stickers, packaging, rendering mockups, and learning to enjoy the process of it along the way.”

Initial Ideas

I first wished to make a board game with matching little clay charms as prototypes (pictures shown below). Or a children’s book, a graphic novel, or a series of illustrations.

Brainstorming Ideas

Exploring the idea of finding ways to heal and connect with my inner child through art and language. To learn about my ways to represent my culture with subtle and nuanced imagery.

Process Work

Initially, I had thought of silk-screen printing all the 12 illustrations but because of the time restraints of a term-project, I decided to get the printing out-sourced. I made my own handwriting into a font for more efficiency.

Final Thoughts

The biggest challenge I gave to myself was to figure out how to combine digital and analogue techniques into the making-process of a physical product. It was my first time making my own font for a project, I thought it added an extra personal touch.

Additional Thoughts

With all the print exploration and the short turnaround time, I researched some printing companies that I could outsource. In the end, I decided on MOO printing. They have printed all my promotional materials and the final edition of the cards.

For fun, I added a photo of my first prototype and the first charms (as i was saying earlier). As you can see, the illustrations are different and I have changed a few key details. After feedback from peers and professors, the two most critical changes are the size of the cards and the back illustrations.
